Siberian husky dogs are also popularly known as husky. Undoubtedly, one of the most famous and beautiful breeds of dogs. They are robust, healthy and high energy dogs. They have the thick attractive coat with piercing eyes that make them distinctive. Their wolf-like appearance makes them very attractive but unlike them, they are not aggressive. History:

Siberian Huskies are medium in size and were used to pull heavy loads in the snow for long distances. They were very much involved with the Chukchi people as they were bred by the Chukchi of Northeast Asia. After their import to Alaska, they became immensely popular in Canada and United States.

Can I own a husky dog in India?

Well, the Huskies dogs are not meant for the Indian climate as they have a thick coat and can only live in the cold weather. (After all, they are from Siberian Peninsula where the temperature can even go down to minus 60 degrees Celsius). The hot and humid climate of India can create health issues in them. More so, if they are kept in enclosed spaces. They have a problem with shedding fur all the year round which increases majorly in warm climates.

However, if you are planning to adopt a husky in India, make sure the house should be fully air-conditioned or at least husky’s place is cold enough to make its survival comfortable. Also, they are known to be the good escape artists so never leave them off the leash.

Are Huskies good for first-time dog owners?

Huskies are very cheerful and friendly dogs in nature – but they are fiercely independent and have a personality of their own. If you are looking for a happy, gentle and loving dog then husky is the right choice for you. They are very active and love to enjoy long walks and running. Though it is not recommended for the first time owners because huskies require to be pet or trained by a patient and experienced family.

Hereditary issues with Huskies:

They have a good lifespan of 13-14 years but they are prone to some of the genetic problems which can affect their lifespan. The common ones are Hip Dysplasia and eye issues like the cataract.

Hip Dysplasia is a common problem in large dog breeds. A husky can develop this issue in its early age of under 18 months. Though it is not in our control as this is a genetic concern but yes we can minimize its risk by proper breeding. Stay away from puppy mills and backyard breeders!

Also, a husky puppy suffering from Hip Dysplasia can be managed by surgery or medical treatment. The husky owner should take care of its weight control and exercise control activities so that it does not cause any discomfort to the puppy.

Another genetic issue that can occur in your husky puppy is cataract. Cataracts can develop in the puppy at the early age of 3 months. Corneal Dystrophy is the disease that an affects the young huskies mainly female ones. Progressive retinal atrophy is another eye disease that decreases the night vision and can even lead to the complete blindness.

What can be done?

Whenever you adopt a husky, make sure it is from a reputable breeder who is answerable to you regarding every query. He should have taken several steps for the care and treatment of its genetic concerns.

They love to socialize with other animals and people around them. In order to provide them a healthy and comfortable lifestyle, you majorly need to take care of the climatic conditions.
