In the midst of everyone wanting a foreign breed, our local Indian dog breeds lie forgotten. This is the biggest and most complete list of Indian dog breeds with their history, origin, and characteristics. A large part of this research came from S. Theodore Baskaran’s brilliant book “The Book of Indian Dogs”.

Alaknoori

Origin: Karnataka

Type: Hound

This breed is very closely related to Caravan hound. As is the case with most primitive breeds, this breed also got its name from the village where it was bred – Alakanoor in Karnataka. The King of Kolhapur had imported these breeds for the purpose of pig-sticking. He kept them in Alakanoor/ Alakhanur in Karnataka. The king bred these dogs with Caravans (another Indian dog breed) and succeeded in creating a breed that was christened Alaknoori. These dogs are very fast but also got heated quickly (even with their short coats)

Bakharwal

Origin: Pir Panjal Mountain area of the Hindu Kush and the Himalayas

Bakharwal Dog India

The Bakharwals got their name from the nomadic tribes of Bakharwal and Gujjars who used the dog for hunting and for protecting their sheep. It is also known as the Bakerwali Shepherd Dog.

To withstand the cold, the Bakharwals have a double coat, with the outer coat being average or long. They have a stout, sturdy stature, strong legs, and a bushy tail. Even as a working dog, there has been a practice to keep the Bakharwals as a vegetarian dog and feed them a diet of milk and maize bread. The Bakhwarwals seem on a verge of extinction and need urgent focus.

Banjara Hound

Origin: Maharashtra

Type: Hound

Size: Medium, short coated.

Banjara Hound Dog Vanjari Dog

An obscure breed that is now wrapped in confusion. Know by many names such as Vanjari/ Vanchari Hound, Banjari Hound, Wanjari Hound – what is certain is that this was used by the nomadic Banjaras. They used to travel everywhere with them and protect them as they moved in lonely places. The dog is about 25 Kgs and now likely interbred into a different structure. Early experts compared these dogs to the Danish boarhound and the Persian Greyhound. The coats were short and the color often black

Caravan Hound

Origin: Maharashtra

Type: Hound

Caravan Hound

Caravan Hounds are intelligent and an independent nature breed. As hounds, their sense of smell is quite efficient. Further, with strong and powerful jaws they are good at hunting. A good amount of daily exercise keeps them active and fit. Caravan, also known as “Karwani” is roughly 65 centimeters tall and weighs around 22-28 kilograms. The coat varies in colors but mainly it is fawn in color.

Chippiparai

Origin: Tamil Nadu

Type: Hound

Size: Large, leggy, long head

Chippiparai Dog

Named after its place of origin in Chippiparai which is located near Madurai in Tamil Nadu – this dog was bred by royal families. An intelligent and loyal breed – it was often used for hunting purposes. The dogs were mainly used for hunting boar, hare, and deer because of their great speed and agility. The dog comes in different colors and hence it is called by different names like paruki, sevalai pullai. They weigh around 30 kilograms. The sleek, royal look made them a symbol of dignity.

Himalayan Mastiff

The Himalayan Mastiffs are strong, muscular and giant dogs living in the Himalayas including Sikkim. They are one of the largest breeds of Indian dogs and also one of the most expensive breeds in India. They are also known as Tibetan mastiffs and look like the mountain dogs, in fact, there is also a strong resemblance with saint bernard. Known as the guardian dogs of the Himalayas, the mastiffs have been used as the safeguards of the sheep against wolves and leopards. They are 70 centimeters tall and weighs around 75 kilograms.

The Himalayan sheepdog is another large breed of Indian dogs built to sustain the cold weather of mountains. Strong and fearless, they are used for guarding livestock. They are known as the “Bhotia” or “Bhote kukur” in Nepal and Ladakh regions. It’s a rare breed and is similar to Tibetan mastiff. They are hardly seen beyond the regions of Nepal and India. The Himalayan sheepdog is 60 centimeters tall and weighs around 30-40 kilograms.

It was one of the four dogs for whom postal stamps were issued in 2005.

Jonangi

Origin: Andhra Pradesh

This is a small sized Indian breed originated from the Godavari Basin of Andhra Pradesh. The Jonangi breed is also known as Jonangi Jagilam or Kolleti Jagilam. Their coat is quite short, through which its skin is even visible. Jonangi were often used for taking care of the livestock like ducks. They are extremely smart dogs and easily trainable. Highly agile – they can cover short distances at a great speed. They have a unique characteristic of digging small ditches on beach and sitting in them. They are 30-40 centimeters tall and weighs around 20 kilograms.

Kombai

The Kombai/ Combai breed has wide jaws and a strong personality. They are a terrier-like breed and famous for hunting deer and bison. In recent times, this breed can only be found in scarcity in few regions as they were highly endangered species. There natural nature is aggression against strangers and is now often used as a guard dog. Their height lies between 38 to 80 centimeters and weight around 20 to 30 kilograms.

Koochee

Origin: Afghanistan

The Koochee/ Kuchi breed of dogs is also known as “Afghan Shepherd”. In the olden days, when merchants who were used to sell goods, introduced this breed to India. The dogs were used to guard caravans at night from wolves, big cats, and thieves when the merchants used to travel with cattle and camels. Its height is 70 centimeters and it weighs around 50 kilograms.

The Kuchi’s Pashto name is De Kochyano Spai or Jangi Spai – which translates to Dog of the nomads or Fighter dogs. They are a true nomad dog and often, unfortunately, used in dog fighting.

Kaikadi

Origin: Maharashtra

Again a nomadic dog, this terrier-like breed is named after a nomadic tribe in Maharashtra. This dog breed is suitable for large open areas. Kaikadi dogs are small animals and are 40 centimeters tall and weigh around 20 kilograms. They are known for hunting squirrels, mongooses. This breed has a short coat that requires less maintenance.

Kanni

Origin: Tamil Nadu

Kanni Dogs

This breed is very famous in Tamil Nadu region. The name kanni has a special meaning in Tamil, it means “pure” and that’s why this breed had given this name for its purity of heart and loyal nature. In the olden days, these dogs were used by landlords or zamindars for hunting purposes. A kanni dog is slim like a cheetah and its light on its feet.

They are very similar to Chippiparai as a breed (perhaps the only difference is color).

These dogs are often further named based on their color. An off-white kanni dog is known as “Paala Kanni” while the kanni dog with brown spots is known as “Pottu Kanni” and the ones who do not have the brown spots are called as “Karun Kanni” or “Black Kanni”. They are 64 centimeters tall and weigh around 35 kilograms.

Kurumalai

Origin: Tamil Nadu

Size: Large and short-coated

It has been claimed by some breeders that this breed is another variant of Chippiparai. They are very famous for hunting hares and antelopes like other sighthounds. Kurumalai dogs are 60 centimeters tall and weigh around 30 kilograms. Its coat is blackish-brown in color and is a very agile dog.

Lhasa apso

Origin: Tibet

This breed is an old breed. It is also known as the “Bark Lion Sentinel Dog” from the Tibetan aristocracy. It has a thick coat because of which it requires a lot of care. It is best known of the Himalayan breeds. In Tibet, this dog is considered as the good luck charm to its owner. It is 28 centimeters tall and weighs not more than 7 kilograms.

Centuries ago, this breed has come from Afghanistan along with the Pathans and Rohillas. Pashmi means “hairy” as they have hair on over their ears, tails, and legs. They are good in chasing that’s why traditionally they were used for the hunting of hares. In general, pashmis are grey or white in color. A full-grown pashmi is 55-60 centimeters tall and weighs around 20 kilograms.

Pandikona

Origin: Vijayanagar (Now Andhra Pradesh)

Padikona Dogs

This breed’s origin was Vijayanagar but later they were found in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh. It has bat-like ears but unfortunately, they have been cropped by their owners. Their coat is smooth. This breed is famous for guarding and hunting boars. These dogs are considered to be very good with children. Their size varies from 50-66 centimeters.

Patti

Origin: Tamil Nadu

The Patti breed was originally used by the villagers for the safeguarding of patti (where sheep were herded)against the wolves and foxes. Its coat is tan and has bat-like ears. They are 45-55 centimeters tall and weigh around 25-28 kilograms.

Pati Patia

Origin: Odisha

Type: Working Dogs

Size: Medium

This breed is medium in size and has a sharp nose with the brown or black coat. These dogs were used for hunting purposes by the tribal in the regions of Odisha. They are slightly smaller than a Labrador breed dog. They are also used by the police force for guarding. They weigh around 25 kilograms and are 50 centimeters in length.

Rampur Hound

Origin: Rajasthan and the Sind region of Pakistan

This breed is a cross breed between a mastiff and a greyhound. They were also used as sheepdogs. These dogs are heavy-boned and have a smooth coat. The king of Danta has used this breed for pig-sticking (a sport). This dog is 70 centimeters tall and weighs around 40 kilograms.

This dog breed has a dense and silky coat which is usually black, fawn and red in color. They have hairy feet to walk comfortably in the snow. These dogs have been trained by the monks to move the prayer wheels in monasteries. They are 25 centimeters high and 6-7 kilograms in weight.

Origin: Himachal Pradesh

This breed is often used as a guard dog in Himachal Pradesh. It is also known as “the bearded dog”. It is a very ancient breed which is locally known as Tsango Apso (a dog which is from Tsang region). This breed is popular in dog shows all over the world. These dogs are 35-40 centimeters tall and weigh around 12 kilograms.

Vaghari Hound

Origin: Gujarat

Vaghari Hound Dogs

This breed got its name from a nomadic tribe which was known as the “Vaidava Vaghari”. The jaws of these dogs are more powerful than other sighthound dogs. Its coat is brownish in color. They are 55 centimeters in length and about 35 kilograms in weight.
